Ron Hayman, aged 70, has put his beloved butchers R Hayman, in Crookes, on the market earlier this month to take a well-deserved retirement.

The grandad-of-one, who appeared in The Star in 1996 for hitting two holes-in-one on in a golf tournament, said he is planning plenty of rounds in retirement.

He said: "It's been a fabulous time here. You get some real characters come in and the best thing about the job is meeting them all every day.

"I hope to be playing plenty of golf in retirement. I'll also be keeping fit and getting about."

Ron set-up shop in 1979 after getting a tip-off from his auntie that Fred Burrows butchers, which used to operate from the premises, was up for sale.

Initially going into partnership with his engineer brother Cyril, Ron soon took the place on single-handed.

Ron said he learned his trade while working as a butcher for Fine Fare supermarkets on Heeley bottom and at Firth Park.

"This shop has been a butchers for hundreds of years," said Ron. "It would be really good to see it continue on as a quality butchers."

Ron said when he took ownership it was a tiny building, until he bought the bakery next door and extended it.

"I remember once I could hear all this noise coming from the flat above, which I rent out, " said Ron.

"I went up to see what all the fuss was about and all the lads were sat there playing guitar with Jarvis Cocker."

Granddaughter Autumn, aged 17, has been helping Ron out in the shop since finishing school.

She said: "I think grandad's definitely ready for retirement, he works hard. It's good working for him, but can be stressful."

Ron's long-standing customers say they will miss him.
