Sheffield business found guilty of breaking health and safety law following death of man at their premises

Chesterfield Specialist Cylinders (CSC), who are based in Meadowhall Road, Meadowhall, were found guilty of a charge of employer fail to discharge general health, safety and welfare duty to employee yesterday, following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court.

This follows the death of a man at their Sheffield premises on July 10, 2015.

The firm, which is an operating subsidiary of Pressure Technologies plc, will be sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on December 9 this year.

CSC entered a not guilty plea to the charge during a hearing held at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court in March.

The Health and Safety Executive brought the prosecution against CSC under a section of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, alleging that the firm failed to discharge their duty to ensure so far as is reasonably practicable the safety of all of their employees, including the man who died, during ‘ultra large cylinder leak testing at the premises’.

Speaking after the verdict was returned, a spokesman for CSC said: "Our thoughts are with his family following the conclusion of the trial yesterday.

“This is a complex case and the legal process is still ongoing.

“We are unable to comment further at this stage."
