Sheffield boxer Callum Beardow bounces back after three years injured to win English title at Magna Centre

A Sheffield boxer made history when winning an English title at Rotherham's Magna Centre.

Callum Beardow took the English elite cruiserweight belt by beating London’s Ola Allausa on a unanimous decision.

The 21-year-old Sheffield City Boxing Club fighter is the first ever holder of the belt recently introduced by England Boxing.

It was a great win for former national junior champion Callum, who was cheered on by the 120-strong ‘Beardow Army.’ And it represents a spirited comeback by the Gleadless boxer after a series of injuries.

He was out for nearly three years after three major shoulder operations.

Now he is targeting the senior elite championships which start at Colley WMC, Parson Cross on Thursday (March 30).

Sheffield City have five boxers entering,Nohmaan hussain at 56kg, Muma Meweemba (69kg),Ryszard Lewicki (75kg),William Simpson (81kg) and Callum (86kg).

Club head coach Brendan Warburton said: “Despite Callum’s bad luck with injuries he has managed to keep focused and never left the gym. He worked with Danny Wilson and the boxing science team at Hallam University for the last four years. They have made him stronger, fitter and faster.

“He also did his coaching badges and he is a level two coach and runs some sessions at the Sheffield City Gym in Sharrow and at Sheffield University.”
