NATIONAL attention has been given to plans to create an antiques shopping quarter in Sheffield - which is expected to launch in September.

The idea - pushed forward by traders around Broadfield Road, Heeley - has attracted support from nearby businesses and the city council.

Now it has also featured in The Antiques Trade Gazette, a specialist magazine which is backing the bid by offering advice.

Artist Hendrika Stephens, who is chairman of a group leading the development, said: “We have been overwhelmed with support, from those willing to put time and energy into developing the proposals, to others willing to offer free professional services to help move things forward.”

The quarter is a 1.5 mile stretch which has about 15 centres and shops selling antique, retro, vintage and arts wares.

Traders believe rebranding the area as the city’s official antiques quarter, like the Devonshire Quarter, could boost trade and encourage more businesses to set up there.

Since an initial meeting in April they have developed an action plan which will take them to a full launch in September. A sub-group has also been set up to work on marketing, with support from Marketing Sheffield, and a photoshoot has been organised for this week.

Hendrika added: “While obviously the area will be looking to invest in brown signage and collective marketing, the current offers of help enable things to move forward quickly while the group still finds its feet.

“Although it’s realised that development will be financially beneficial to the businesses involved, the quarter passionately believe that it is as much about bringing improvement to the area and raising awareness of this vibrant part of town.”

Illustrator Dan Potter, Jennie Beard of Hansley Beard Events and Wedding Design Studio and photographer Amie Parsons are organising the marketing photoshoot for the quarter.
