Sheffield air raid that killed and injured nearly 50 people to be investigated - more than 100 years later

The Sheffield Zeppelin Study Group has received the cash windfall from the Heritage Lottery Fund and will use it to look into the September 1916 German airship attack during the First World War.

Those involved in the project hope to find out the reasons the city was so unprepared for the attack, and discover more about families of the people killed and injured.

Sheffield residents who witnessed the event themselves gave interviews to a team from Sheffield Archives about the incident in 1981.

One woman described "being frightened" after seeing a "dark object going over the River Don towards Rotherham which made a peculiar booming noise."

A man said: "There were people climbing up lampposts to turn out gas lamps after someone said they had seen the zeppelins."
