The Tigers came out on top 49-40 when the two sides met at Owlerton on Thursday night in a fixture that got heated towards the end.

Home skipper Kyle Howarth and Redcar captain Ben Barker exchanged words following the conclusion of Heat 13 before tempers boiled over, forcing team-mates to separate the pair.

It had been a relatively quiet night up until that point with the Tigers overcoming an early two point deficit.

A strong mid-meeting spell from the hosts saw them open up a ten point lead with three maximums in the space of four races, courtesy of some textbook gating.

Charles Wright led home two of them starting in heat five when he and Lasse Bjerre outgated their opponents to ease to their first 5-1 of the night and move the Tigers in front for the first time.

Wright again made the best start in the seventh but this time it was teenage reserve Jack Smith who followed him through.

Kurtz, who fell in his opening ride, recovered from consecutive pointless outings to win the eighth with James Shanes getting the better of his counterparts away from the tapes.

The Tigers were made to temporarily sweat in Heat Ten though as the visitors were gifted a 5-0. Howarth suffered bike problems whilst challenging for the lead on the opening lap before Kurtz was disqualified on lap three after a desperate dive under Mikkel B Andersen.

But Sheffield responded with two heat advantages to move 11 clear courtesy of hard charging wins from Wright and Bjerre. And it was the latter who headed into the last race unbeaten, but missed out on a paid maximum as former Tiger Ty Proctor became the first rider to finish ahead of the Dane.

SHEFFIELD 49: Charles Wright 13, Lasse Bjerre 12+2, Kyle Howarth 9+1, Jack Smith 6+2, James Shanes 6+2, Todd Kurtz 3, Josh Bates R/R.
