Serious sex assault may have been ‘at gunpoint’

Police said last night they are unable to confirm whether or not a sexual assault reported in Rotherham was carried out at gunpoint.

Officers have stepped up uniformed patrols after a woman reported being sexually assaulted at a property in Wath.

South Yorkshire Police said they were unable to confirm or deny reports on social media that the attack had been carried out at gunpoint.

A spokeswoman for the force said the victim is 26 years old.

She said the incident was being investigated as a ‘serious sexual assault’ rather than a rape.

She said of reports the attack was at gunpoint: “It is unconfirmed at this time.”

Police said they are keen to speak to anyone who may hold information to assist with the inquiry.

The attack was reported to have taken place on Tuesday night.
