Serious accusation to make and unless proven a public apology is called for

I'm writing to respond to report on events yesterday at Chelsea Road in Nether Edge and in particular quotes from Councillor Bryan Lodge.

He’s quoted as saying the actions of 40+ Sheffield citizens standing peacefully on public pavements was “unlawful” and “unreasonable” and that he found it “incredibly disappointing”.

Perhaps he would like to define “unlawful” in this context. It’s a very serious accusation to make and unless proven a public apology is called for.

I would remind Coun Lodge of his many quotes supporting the peaceful lawful protests for which Sheffielders are renowned.

With regards to claims the tree represents any danger to the public I can inform your readers that STAG has sought a great deal of independent opinion on the elm.

Last year one of the world’s foremost tree consultants inspected the tree and found it safe.

This was one of the go-to experts in cases around liability from tree accidents. He travels the world to give evidence in courts of law.

These constant attempts to paint tree campaigners in a bad light are wearing thin.

It serves only to illustrate the paucity of any valid arboricultural, ecological and environmental substance to the council’s actions.
