Police have warned thieves who burgled a high street store that they should ‘seek medical advice’ because the items they stole may be contaminated with asbestos.

Thieves broke into the Original Factory Shop overnight and stole two drills, similar to the one pictured.

Now police have discovered the building has ‘a significant amount of asbestos’ and are warning the thieves that the drills could be contaminated and that they should seek medical advice urgently.

The shop is based in High Street, Maltby and the break-in happened between 5pm on July 5 and 9am the following morning.

Sergeant Sharon Hulley said: “The property taken from the building is believed to be contaminated with asbestos which can have a significant health impact on anyone who comes in to contact with it.

“I would urge the offenders to seek medical advice as soon as possible, in addition to anyone who has come in to contact with any of the stolen property.

“I would also ask that if you are now in possession of the stolen property, please do not touch it and contact South Yorkshire Police straight away.

“There is no risk to anyone passing the building or within the local area and contractors are working to decontaminate the building.

“If you have any information about this incident, or know who may be responsible, please call 101 quoting incident number 266 of 6 July 2016.”
