Sea Cadets go for bronze

The team of 14 Sea Cadets completed a weekend of adventurous training in the Peak District National Park, which involved map route-planning, walking to bearings, setting up and camp and cooking food.

DofE team leader Michael Phipps said: “The Duke of Edinburgh’s award programme is a fantastic opportunity for young people to gain national recognition for taking part in a wide range of activities such as: windsurfing, learning how to play the snare drum and first aid.

“The awards enable young people to build their self-confidence whilst developing important skills such as teamwork and commitment and are extremely well respected by employers and Universities. I am delighted that all 14 of our bronze candidates have successfully completed the award this year, as a level of independence is required of anyone hoping to earn this award, and I’me looking forward to taking part in the silver and gold awards next year.”

The Duke Of Edinburgh Awards is just one part of Sheffield Sea Cadets’ activities and training, along with community work.

Sheffield Sea Cadet Charlie Ramsell said: “I did the bronze DofE to improve my teamwork, navigation and fitness levels. My team did really well during the expedition, keeping our morale high due to good teamwork and a lovely meal at night. On the first day of the real expedition we left Monsal head and set off towards Sheldon. The walk on the Saturday was easiest and Sunday proved more challenging as we had to tackle the great ‘Shacklow Steps.’ The weekend was a great success.”
