Scrap metal recycling under threat

PLANS for a controversial South Yorkshire recycling plant look set to be turned down - because councillors say they don't know enough about the project.

The proposed plant in Station Road, Wath, is for scrap metal recycling but planners fear it could also be used for processing more hazardous materials.

There are also concerns about the amount of traffic the plant could generate - and the possible flood risk from a nearby brook.

Rotherham Council says it has had numerous objections on the grounds the site could be a health risk, particularly if it is used for hazardous waste.

Planners say they will now refuse permission for the development until they know more. They are also threatening to start enforcement proceedings if work starts on the plant before the application is finally dealt with.

A report by planners says: “The proposal is for the erection of a workshop for scrap metal recycling - but it also involves a change of use from a scrap metal yard to a scrap metal yard with general industry.”
