A WOMAN was left in a ‘serious’ condition in hospital after she was hit by a train when her mobility scooter apparently ran into its path.
The 73-year-old is believed to have lost control of the scooter. It left the platform at Barnsley railway station at around 2.30pm yesterday. She was then trapped under the train before firefighters freed her.
The station was closed temporarily and the woman, from Monk Bretton, taken to Northern General Hospital by air ambulance.
Her condition was described as ‘serious’.
A British Transport Police spokesman said: “A lady on a mobility scooter on platform one is believed to have lost control and travelled off the platform into the path of an oncoming train.
“The train involved was the 14.05 Leeds to Nottingham Northern Rail service.”
Paramedics also attended.
