One of Britain’s most renowned scientists hailed Harry Brearley’s discovery of stainless steel as a ‘modern day miracle’ during a visit to Sheffield.
Professor Mark Miodownik, a materials scientist, engineer, broadcaster and writer at University College London hailed the homegrown hero during a rousing speech at the 100 Years of Stainless Steel Gala Dinner event.
The city centre’s Millennium Gallery opened its doors for the bash, hosting industrialists, designers, academics and city leaders who listened as guest speaker Prof Miodownik congratulated and thanked the city for its amazing invention.
Neil MacDonald, Sheffield’s Master Cutler, said: “The event was held as a thank you to private companies who have supported the centenary celebrations through the 100 Club initiative.
“The evening had a celebratory atmosphere, and concluded with the auction of a spectacular Joe Scarborough art commission depicting the evolution of the steel industry in Sheffield.
“Joe himself delivered an entertaining explanation of the piece.”
The evening concluded with a charity auction.
