School is hoping to bag Tesco cash boost

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £5,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to local community projects.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

Broomhall Nursery School is one of the groups on the shortlist, for their project: The Storytime Tree Sculpture. The grant would enable the nursery to commission a woodcarver to create a magical sculpture from the unsightly tree stump left behind when a large, unsafe beech tree was removed on the boundary of the nursery grounds. Drawing inspiration from much loved stories - including Owl Babies, The Three Bears, and The Gruffalo - the carvings will provide visual and sensory stimulation for the children encouraging them to recount stories and create new ones in their play.

Headteacher Diane Hetherington said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for the public vote in the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. Our large, enclosed grounds are a vital resource for children in our community. We continually strive to maintain and improve the grounds providing a safe and stimulating play space. The sculpture will also provide something interesting to look at for local residents and passers-by.”

Voting is open in stores throughout March and April. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.
