School gets classy rating

A SCHOOL has become the first in the Dearne Valley to be rated as "good" by government inspectors.

Heather Garth Primary, at Bolton-upon-Dearne, is "a good school where pupils feel safe and happy and enjoy their learning", according to a report by Ofsted.

Inspectors added: "Good quality teaching is characterised by a thoughtful approach that brings learning alive, whilst not neglecting the basic skills. Pupils say that lessons are interesting and fun. They believe that their teachers really want them to do well."

The report said staff work hard to provide a stimulating environment, in which pupils are encouraged to become confident learners and behaviour is excellent. Although a significant number of children enter Heather Garth with well below average attainment, and significantly low literacy and numeracy skills, recent information shows pupils in years 5 and 6 are making good progress and are set to reach broadly average standards

Parents are very appreciative of the school and the good care, guidance and support it gives to their children, the report added.

It also highlighted pupils' strong awareness of how food and exercise affects their bodies, giving them an excellent understanding of the importance of living healthily.

The Ofsted report concluded: "Good leadership and management by the headteacher and key staff have ensured continuous improvement since the last inspection.

"The continued improvement is largely attributable to the recruitment of new staff, increased stability in staffing and strategies designed to improve pupils' learning."

Heather Garth's headteacher Ann Wise said: "The recent inspection has been a tremendous boost to all concerned with the school.''

Chair of governors, Sandra Farr added: "I am very proud to be the Chair of Governors of the first school in the Dearne to be graded by Ofsted as a 'good school'.''
