YOUNGSTERS were evacuated from their secondary school yesterday after a fire broke out in a classroom.

Nobody was injured in the blaze at Wombwell High School, Wombwell, near Barnsley.

Firefighters were called to the incident just after 1pm and remained on the scene to damp down and ventilate the area throughout the afternoon.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The school was evacuated safely and nobody was injured.

“The fire was contained to a classroom on the second floor.”

Five fire engines, from Barnsley, Dearne, Elm Lane and Rotherham, attended. Damage was limited to the classroom affected, believed to be an IT suite.

An investigation is underway.
