School and its healthy students celebrate a sporting life

PUPILS at a Sheffield secondary are enjoying the sporting life - enabling their school to win a coveted award.

Firth Park Community Arts College now has Healthy School Status, thanks to its efforts to promote active lifestyles.

A celebration was held for pupils and parents where certificates were handed out and headteacher Mo Laycock was presented with a ceremonial plaque.

The event also highlighted a year of sporting success achieved by the school’s students in a variety of fields.

Collecting trophies were the athletics, badminton, football and cricket teams, while also featured were young people who took part in a variety of school sports trips this year, including surfing in Devon and adventure training.

Glyn Rhodes, ex-international boxer and former Firth Park student, was on hand during the evening to present the awards and also gave an encouraging speech about sports and sporting achievements.

Amy Plant from the Sheffield Healthy Schools Programme said: “It was fantastic to be a part of an event which honoured so many students for their excellent sporting achievements over the past year.”

The Sheffield Healthy Schools Programme is supported by Sheffield Primary Care Trust and Sheffield Council.
