Sarah is Championing local missing voters

2381 Rotherham people, around 3.7 per cent, have fallen off the register and may not even realise it.

Sarah said: “The Tories have rushed through these changes to the electoral registration system. There are major local elections in Rotherham next year and soon we have a big choice to make about whether Britain stays in the EU. But if people aren’t on the electoral register, they will not be able to vote and have their say. They could even face an £80 fine and find it harder to get a credit card or a mobile phone contract.”

Labour Party research found that nationally, an estimated 800,000 people are no longer on the register as a result of these changes.

Barnsley East MP Michael Dugher also expressed his concern, after the number of registered voters across the Barnsley Local Authority area decreased by 11,995, or 6.57 percent - 3.56 per cent in Mr Dugher’s Barnsley East constituency. Mr Dugher is supporting Labour’s Mission Million campaign, which criticised the reforms as damaging to our democracy.

Mr Dugher said: “The Government was warned repeatedly that these changes to voter registration would deny voters their right to vote. Thousands of my constituents, and many thousands more across Barnsley, have now dropped off the electoral register.

“This is a deliberate attack on our democracy that will deny many voters a say at the polls this May, when there are important elections for local councillors and the Police and Crime Commissioner.

“The new parliamentary boundaries, designed to ensure fewer MPs in Labour areas, will now be drawn up based on an electoral roll that excludes hundreds of thousands of voters nationally.
