Sam Winnall is relishing the chance to work with Jos Luhukay

Winnall spent much of last season on loan with Derby County, having found opportunities hard to come by at Hillsborough. He sustained an anterior cruciate injury which cut short his campaign last February.

The loan move materialised after Winnall slipped down in the pecking order for a regular starting spot when then Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal was in charge.

Now back at Wednesday and edging closer to full fitness after playing 45 minutes in a development match last week, Winnall is relishing the chance to work with Luhukay.

The 27-year-old, a bargain £500,000 signing from local rivals Barnsley, told The Star: "It is going to be a fresh start for me under new management and new staff and I'm really looking forward to it.

"For obvious reasons, I left last year but now I am back and all I am focused on is getting myself back in the starting eleven, hopefully scoring goals and helping this club to be successful."

Winnall has a big job on his hands trying to break into the starting line-up. Wednesday are sixth in the Championship and have only failed to score once in 12 league matches.

"It is great that I am coming back into a side that are on fire and have been playing really well," acknowledged Winnall. "The run of fixtures that we had in between the international breaks were really tough but we came out if with some really good performances and results.

"I'm really looking forward to getting back involved with the squad and getting myself hopefully challenging for a place in the starting eleven."
