Safety fears in shopping street

A BUSY area of Sheffield city centre was cordoned off amid public safety fears.

Sheffield City Centre Ambassadors sectioned off part of the pavement in Fargate yesterday afternoon after a window was smashed in an office building above clothes store Republic.

Shoppers were diverted to the side entrance of the store while Orchard Square security staff kept watch for stray pieces of glass falling.

A handyman was called out to secure the window and the area was reopened after around three hours.

Sophie Ward, a shop assistant at Republic, said: “I think people saw the cordoned off area and feared the worst at first, but I’ve been standing redirecting people trying to get in the shop and reassuring the public.”
