A supermarket has been evacuated and traffic queues have built up following a suspected bomb scare in Sheffield.

Police and the fire brigade were called to the incident to Asda at Handsworth at just after 3pm.

The Handsworth exit slip road of the Sheffield Parkway is currently closed, and traffic is queueing in both directions at the B6200 Handsworth Road junction.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said a fire crew from Darnall was attending the scene and conducting a search of the supermarket.

He confirmed that Asda staff and customers had been evacuated.

A police spokeswoman added: “South Yorkshire Police is currently attending a suspicious incident at a supermarket on Handsworth Road in Sheffield. Handsworth Road is currently closed whilst officers are continuing to conduct enquiries in the area.

“Sheffield Parkway remains open in both directions.”
