A medal-winning runner has backed the fight to save Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium from demolition.

Mukhtar Mohammed, European Indoor 800m bronze medallist, is appealing for Sheffield Council to hand over the venue.

The council turned down the Save Don Valley Stadium group’s application for a Community Asset Transfer, on the grounds the newly-refurbished Woodbourn Road is an adequate alternative.

Mukhtar, aged 22, said: “‘Woodbourn Road can only accommodate a tiny audience.

“The 25,000-capacity Don Valley has the facilities audiences demand from a 21st-century venue.”
