ROYAL WEDDING:Modern neckline with traditional long sleeves - reaction to Meghan's dress

The first glimpse of Meghan’s dress has revealed an “elegant and sophisticated” choice, a commentator has said.

Aruna Seth, shoe designer and socialite, said the boat neckline on the white dress was “modern” complemented by traditional long sleeves.

Ms Seth, who designed Pippa Middleton’s shoes for the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, said: “The veil looks very traditional and as I expected and her hair up looks gorgeous in a low bun.”

“Very elegant and sophisticated.”When asked how it compares to Kate’s dress, she added: “Looks more simple and the boat neck is very modern, traditional long-sleeved.”

The first glimpse of the bride’s gown was seen as she travelled to St George’s Chapel in a vintage Rolls-Royce limousine, loaned for the day by the Queen.

The pure white gown was designed by Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy, with three quarter length sleeves and open bateau neckline.

The delicate veil was five metres long and made from silk tulle with a trim of hand-embroidered flowers in silk threads and organza, with her two pageboys carrying the ends as she made her way up the steps.

Her hair was styled in an up do and she wore the glittering Queen Mary's Diamond Bandeau tiara, loaned to her by the Queen.

Royal brides are traditionally loaned priceless heirlooms to wear on their wedding day.

Meghan could have chosen the Spencer tiara - famously worn by Harry's later mother Diana, Princess of Wales when she married the Prince of Wales in 1981.

But Meghan has instead selected this little known piece, which features a magnificent floral-shaped suspended brooch in the centre made of a large round diamond surrounded by nine smaller circular diamonds.

It was specifically made for the Queen's grandmother Queen Mary in 1932 to accommodate the detachable brooch, which was given to Mary as a wedding present in 1893 by the County of Lincoln.

The bandeau is a flexible band of 11 intricate glittering sections, pierced with interlaced ovals and pave set with large and small brilliant diamonds.

The bandeau and the brooch were bequeathed by Queen Mary to her granddaughter the Queen on her death in 1953.
