LIBERAL Democrat councillors in Sheffield have accused transport chiefs of ‘shelving’ plans to introduce Quality Bus Contracts in Sheffield.
The contracts would mean companies would bid to run services, while routes and fares would be set by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive.
Former cabinet member for transport, Coun Ian Auckland believes the contracts are the best option to increase bus patronage, reduce fares and improve services.
But agreements with existing operators First and Stagecoach are being trialled instead
Coun Auckland said: “It is disappointing SYPTE is pursuing voluntary bus arrangements when plans for a Sheffield quality contracts appear to have been shelved.”
