Rovers board will back me and I'll bring success, says Ferguson

Darren Ferguson believes he has the backing of the Doncaster Rovers hierarchy to carry out his long term project at the club '“ even if they are relegated this season.

A drop to League Two looks ever more likely following defeat to Bury on Saturday, a result which left Rovers eight points from safety with only five games to go.

Ferguson is convinced he will bring success to the club in the future and is confident senior club officials share that belief in him after meeting with chairman David Blunt last week.

“I had a good chat with the chairman in the week,” Ferguson told The Star.

“He’s as disappointed with the position as anyone but the conversations we’ve had have been good, positive ones.

“He was at the game and I’m sure he saw the commitment in the players.

“You certainly couldn’t say the players weren’t having a go.

“The conversations have been positive.

“The chairman and the people on the board, they’re a group of people that have been successful their whole lives. Whatever they’ve done, they’ve succeeded in it.

“This is a failure, perhaps their first failure or ours. They have to stay strong.”

Ferguson insists he fully understands that chairman Blunt may come under pressure to act over Rovers’ alarming slide towards relegation, just as he comes under fire over the run of 16 league matches without victory.

And he says he takes responsibility for the poor run which has seen Rovers drop from 11th to 22nd in three months.

Ferguson said: “At the time I came in I didn’t envisage we’d be in this position with five games to go.

“The way we started was very positive.

“But at the end of the day, in terms of how long I’ve been here as a manager, in 32 games we’ve not won enough.

“You have to take responsibility for that which I do.

“Everyone is going to come under the pressure.

“The chairman might come under pressure about my situation. I’m going to come under pressure which is normal.

“But I’m convinced we’ll get it right eventually. It might take longer than what I expected but we’ve just got to keep persevering in what we’re trying to do here.”

The Scot admits it is going to be difficult to secure survival. Rovers are in a position where they could be relegated after the next two games.

Ferguson said: “Obviously the odds are stacked firmly against us but we have to keep going.

“We’ve got five games to keep us in the league. We haven’t won in 16 so the stats and facts tell you it’s going to be difficult.

“All we can do is concentrate on Wigan next week, try to get the win and see where it takes us.”
