The attacker, who is overcoming a knee injury, has been added to Michael O'Neill's squad for the UEFA Nations League matches against Austria and Bosnia.

Boss Paul Warne revealed the news after Saturday's 3-1 loss at Birmingham, where Vassell came off the bench and set up Jon Taylor's goal.

Warne did say that he was only at 80 per cent fitness, but will travel to Belfast to meet up with his new team-mates, having received his first call.

'Kyle Vassell has had a call-up with Northern Ireland so he will go and they will look after him for us,' Warne said.

'I spoke to their manager on Friday, which is good.'

Vassell's selection means there are six players jetting off to represent their country during the international break as Semi Ajayi, Richie Towell, Marek Rodak, Ryan Manning and Tyrone Lewthwaite also got the nod.

'There are a few of the lads that are going and that's great for them individually and great for our club if we have got international players,' Warne added.

'It allows us to really focus on the group and get in the injured players back.'l
