Rotherham United: Why Millers defender Dominic Ball is happy to return to Aberdeen

The 22-year-old joined the Dons on a season-long loan deal late last week having enjoyed a loan spell at the Scottish outfit last term.

Ball’s new move to Pittodrie effectively sees the end of his Millers careers with his three-year deal set to expire next summer.

“One of the big reasons for me was I wanted to come back to somewhere where I knew everyone and could hit the ground running straight away,” said Ball.

“Speaking to the manager, that was important for us both.

“I’m delighted to be back in here and ready to go for the season.”

Ball began his career with Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur and spent time on loan at Cambridge United and Rangers before signing his three-year contract with the Millers in August 2016.

But Millers boss Paul Warne does not see a future for Ball at AESSEAL New York Stadium this season.

Ball made 19 appearances for the Dons last season and played the final five games of the season as the club secured second spot in the Scottish Premiership.

“The end to the season, I think everyone here really enjoyed it,” reflected Ball.

“We deserved it in the end (second spot) and I think that was another reason for me wanting to come back up. I wanted to carry that on.

“We want to carry on that level of performance and that winning mentality we all had as a group of players. If we can continue where we left off, we’ll be in good nick.

“I stay in touch with most of the lads. It was nice to get added back into the group chat, ‘Dom’s coming home!’

“I get on very well with all the boys and the staff and I think it works for both parties."

The Millers first home pre-season friendly is on Wednesday against Cardiff City (7.45pm kick-off).
