Rotherham United: Warne proud to lead Millers at New York

Club legend Warne spent much of last week struggling to control his emotions after being handed the managerial reins following the shock resignation of Kenny Jackett.

But the former Millers player intends to put that behind him when his side are at home to QPR in the Championship tomorrow

“Obviously, it means a lot,” he said. “I will try not to cry, which would be a great start!”

Warne’s playing career ended at Don Valley Stadium and he became fitness coach as the club moved to New York.

“I remember when the stadium was being built,” he recalled. “Scotty (Andy Scott) was the manager and the chairman was showing us round. I was thinking: ‘God, it would be nice to play on that.’ This is obviously the next best thing. I will be very proud.”

The Millers welcome back skipper and midfielder Lee Frecklington after a knee injury and Aimen Belaid could possibly feature in central defence, while Warne will make a late decision on the fitness of goalkeeper Lee Camp after a knee knock.

Warne is hoping centre-half Kirk Broadfoot will be back in first-team contention before Christmas after recovering from back surgery.

“Broady played 45 minutes at York in the reserves this week,” he said. “I went up to watch him after training. He did well. He doesn’t feel like he’s 100 per cent yet, but he won’t be.

“It’s like week one of pre-season for him. He will catch up really quickly. I’m hoping I will be using him prior to Christmas.”
