Rotherham United: Stubbs a wanted man

It is believed the Championship Millers are making an approach to Hibernian asking for permission to speak to Stubbs who led the Scottish second-tier side to Scottish Cup Final glory last week.

But managerless Bolton Wanderers, for whom Stubbs made more than 200 appearances at the start of his playing career, are also thought to be interested in the 44-year-old.

The League One side are looking to appoint a new boss after a turbulent season saw a takeover, the departure of manager Neil Lennon and relegation from the Championship.

Stubbs’ stock is high after two successful seasons north of the border where he has twice come close to taking Hibs to the Scottish Premier League and earlier this month engineered their first Scottish Cup triumph in 114 years.

He had a stellar top-flight playing career in England with Wanderers, Everton and Sunderland, and came close to landing the Rotherham hot-seat in October last year before the job eventually went to Neil Redfearn.

He has a year left on his deal with the Edinburgh club whose fans are keen for him to stay.

The Millers, searching for a successor to Neil Warnock who left them after securing their Championship survival, are also contacting another club as they look to appoint their new man before the end of next week.

Coventry’s City’s Tony Mowbray, who has extensive managerial experience in the Championship with Middlesbrough and West Brom, is thought to be their target. The 52-year-old took the Baggies into the Premier League in 2008 but was unable to keep them there.

He, too, has a year of his contract to run in the Midlands.

Rotherham’s approaches are expected to be made this weekend, but the club are making no comment on speculation that Stubbs and Mowbray are the two men on their radar.

Chairman Tony Stewart has described the quality of the candidates as “superb”.

Other managers who have been in the Millers frame since Warnock’s departure are Gary Bowyer, Stuart Gray, Owen Coyle and Steve McClaren.
