Rotherham United: Stubbs signalled Derbyshire's Millers exit

The 30-year-old topped the goals charts in both of his seasons at the club and played a big part in the Millers’ two successful Championship survival campaigns.

But Stubbs, looking to mount a challenge for the top 10 in his first season in charge, wants to hand the poaching responsibilities to someone else.

“It was a decision that I made,” the new manager confirmed. “I’m looking at different options.”

Rotherham had been in talks with Derbyshire, who was out of contract this summer.

But, after a meeting with Stubbs last week, he signed a deal to play in Cyprus for Division One side Amonoia Nicosia, managed by former Newcastle United boss John Carver.

“As a manager, you have to make these decisions,” Stubbs added. “It’s nothing personal and we wish him well.”

The Millers players return to pre-season training on June 30 and will spend a week in Poland between July 10 and 17.

“I’m looking forward to that,” said Stubbs, who took over the hot-seat on June 2. “It will be great to get to know the lads more. That process happens quicker when you’re away together. There are two games, and we’ll be working hard on fitness.”

The 44-year-old, who led Hibernian to Scottish FA Cup success before joining the Millers, has yet to begin his recruitment but says new faces could be in place before the squad head abroad.

“Hopefully, we’ll have a couple of signings,” he said. “You can’t be too sure, but I’m optimistic.”
