Rotherham United: Stubbs makes decision on Millers five

Defenders Kirk Broadfoot, Richard Wood and Stephen Kelly and attackers Leon Best and Matt Derbyshire were offered new terms before the 44-year-old was installed as boss today.

And Stubbs, who succeeds Warnock at the Championship club, will waste no time in telling them whether they still have a future at AESSEAL New York Stadium now he is in charge.

“We’ve got 10 players who are contracted. We’ve got five who’ve had offers from the previous manager,” he said. “We will speak to them and they will know the decision by tomorrow one way or the other.

The new boss refused to reveal his thinking, adding: “I think it’s important we speak to them first. We want to do things right.”

But he did confirm he wouldn’t be raiding former club Hibernian for new recruits as he gears up for his first season with the Millers hoping to take them into the play-off reckoning.

Hibs striker Jason Cummings was in prolific form in the Scottish Championship last season and there has been speculation he could follow his former manager south of the border.

But Stubbs said: “I have left on good terms. I would like to think I am a decent man and for me to go back there right now, as soon as I have left, is not morally the right thing to do.

“I wouldn’t do that because I have got too much respect and admiration for the club.”

Rotherham have paid Hibs compensation for the services of Stubbs, who had a year left at Easter Road. He resigned before signing a three-year deal with the Millers, but says that was merely to abide by the terms of his contract with the Edinburgh outfit.

“I don’t really get involved in all of that,” he said. “It certainly wasn’t a row. It was done yesterday very amicably and the clubs are happy with the way it has been resolved. It got to the stage where the chairmen spoke to each other and everything was sorted.”

Rotherham chairman Tony Stewart said: “Alan was in our thoughts right from the start. We’ve followed Alan’s career. The timing was right. We had discussions and our ambitions fused. Hibs have been fantastic. We throw bouquets at them.

“Negotiations went fine. We’ve agreed a settlement with Hibs and we move on freely and look forward to the new season.”
