The former Sheffield Wednesday head coach was one of three names on the club’s wanted list in February before the job went to Neil Warnock.

Now that Warnock has left, Gray, who ended this season as a coach at Fulham, is interesting the Championship Millers again.

Fulham were ready to fight to keep their man three and a half months ago had Rotherham made an official approach and the 55-year-old has been happy working in London.

The Millers’ search is stepping up after a quiet day yesterday, with more interviews planned this week and a decision expected next week.

Chairman Tony Stewart says there were talks with one person last week and that other “high calibre” candidates are now being given their chance.

The third figure in the frame in February, former Blackburn Rovers boss Gary Bowyer, is a leading contender this time around, and Gray and Hibernian manager Alan Stubbs are also believed to be under consideration.

Bowyer is thought to be among the people being interviewed as Stewart looks to appoint someone on a two-year deal.

Stubbs, an Scottish Cup Final winner with Hibernian last weekend, came close to landing the post when it went to Neil Redfearn last October,

Ironically, Gray was out of work at that time and keen on working at AESSEAL New York Stadium but the Millers chose to look elsewhere.

Bookmakers have shortened the odds on Coventry City boss Tony Mowbray, who has worked on a tight budget at the Ricoh Arena, being the new Millers man.

Midfielder Joe Newell is making a speedy recovery after undergoing ankle surgery in April once Rotherham had sealed their second-tier survival.

The 23-year-old, who made 38 appearances before his op, is already doing strengthening work with fitness coach Paul Warne and could be ready to start running again in July.

Meanwhile, the Millers took into consideration supporters’ views before deciding on a sky-blue away strip for next season.

The colour was last used in the club’s Don Valley days and was a popular choice. The new Puma kit, which has the name of sponsors Apogee Limited on the front of the shirt, also contains navy blue.

“One of the kits most fondly remembered by fans was from the 2009/10 season, and we have tried to meet that demand by reproducing a similar strip,” Millers commercial director Steve Coakley said.

“The shirt also incorporates the collar which has been well-received on previous shirts and I am sure this strip will be a hit with fans.”
