Speaking exclusively to The Star, Stewart has revealed that the Millers have planned diligently for their e return to the Championship.

Six key signings are likely to come through the door, with the bulk of last season’s promotion-winning squad being given the chance to shine in the second tier.

“We’ve had a lot of time to plan for next season,” said Stewart, pictured.

“There’s a structure in place which identifies the right DNA of player we’re looking for and what type of players we want.

“I think we’re looking in the region of five or six, maybe seven new players for next season.

“Paul (manager Warne) has been identifying his targets and there’s a support structure there to help him get who he wants.

“We probably need a strong midfielder and there are obviously other areas where we’ll need to strengthen.

“But we also want to give the lads who did so well last year the opportunity to impress.

“We’ve seen the young players come on so much, they deserve their chance.”

The Millers return for pre-season training this Sunday ahead of a week-long Austrian training camp close to Vienna (July 8-15).

Warne’s charges will play Austrian sides on Tuesday 10 and Saturday 14, with the rest of the trip involving plenty of fitness work and team-bonding.

The club’s training base at the Lindabrunn Sportschule proved to be very successful last season, with Warne able to put his players through their paces up in the hills.

Meanwhile, the Millers’ home Carabao Cup first-round clash with Wigan Athletic has been confirmed for Tuesday 14 August, 7.45pm kick-off at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Advance adult tickets are £13, £15 on the night, concessions £8 (£10), juveniles 13-17 years £1 (£3) and juniors up to 12 years £1.
