Rotherham United: Redfearn's Becchio bond works in Millers' favour

Becchio is training with the Millers as he proves his fitness after a serious ankle injury and is likely to shun interest from other clubs for the chance to play for the Millers manager.

“I have known him for a long time and I get on really well with him,” Redfearn revealed. “He’s a good kid, a genuine lad. We’ve made a promise to each other.”

The pair met when they were at Leeds United, and Redfearn says the 32-year-old has looked sharp and strong since they hooked up again last week.

“As soon as we get that feeling it’s right, we’ll do it,” the Rotherham boss said. “The lad is prepared to wait. He wants to come and he wants to do well.

“He’s had a bad injury and he’s at the point now where he is fit again. He has been doing quite a bit with other clubs in Argentina and Majorca.

“He has to be free from injury and as close as he can be to match fitness. If we are going to bring him in, then he has got to go straight in. We can’t mess about, We’ve got some points to pick up.”

Rotherham, in Championship action tonight at home to Brighton, are looking for new recruits, with former AESSEAL New York Stadium favourite Alex Revell still among their targets, Redfearn said “tentative” enquiries had been made to his present club, Cardiff City, about the centre-forward.

When asked if Colchester youngster George Moncur was on the Millers wanted list, Redfearn replied: “The best way to answer that, without revealing all our targets, is to say we’ve identified a lot of players, and a lot of young players.

“He’s a player who’s doing well, he’s scoring goals. I would imagine there’ll be a lot of interest in him.”

Rotherham are without injured quartet Stephen Kelly, Leon Best, Lee Frecklington and Farrend Rawson tonight against the Seagulls, who are unbeaten away from home in the league, but are optimistic Danny Ward and Shaw Facey will overcome hip and hamstring niggles respectively.

Kelly is weeks away from fitness after hurting his knee in training as he recovered from a calf problem, while Best has had groin surgery and could be available by the end of the month,

Redfearn said there had been contact from other clubs about Greg Halford and Jordan Bowery who have been told they are free to leave.
