Rotherham United: Redfearn factor seals Becchio deal

Luciano Becchio's friendship with Neil Redfearn saw Rotherham United beat off competition from other clubs for the striker's signature.

The Argentine centre-forward and the Millers manager are pals from their time together at Leeds United.

And when Redfearn came calling there was no-one else the 32-year-old free agent wanted to sign for.

“There were other clubs interested in me. But the first club who called me was Rotherham, you know,” Becchio said.

“I say ‘I want to go there’. I know the gaffer.

“Knowing the gaffer from my Leeds days was a very important part of my decision.”

Becchio goes straight into the squad for tomorrow’s Championship showdown at Cardiff City, having signed a deal until the end of the season.

He needs to hone his match-fitness but has been training with Rotherham for three weeks and before then was working out in Mallorca where he has business interests.

“I’m very happy to come back to Rotherham. I’ve been working very hard in Mallorca,” the hitman, who scored 75 goals in 156 starts for Leeds, said. “I’m ready to play now.

“I was working hard for around two and a half months in Mallorca. I’ve been working on my own, in the gym and then with a team in Mallorca.

“it’s a good time for me to come back here and show what I can do. I hope I can help the team.”

Becchio, who scored twice in five outings for the Millers last season, has already seen enough to think Rotherham will win their battle to stay in the second tier.

“We have a very good team, a very good squad. Now we’ve got to get points,” he said. “I’ve seen the team and they’ve played very well in the last two games. If we go on like this, we will definitely win points and go up the table.

“It’s about turning performances into more wins. I see a very good team, a strong team. If we play like I have seen us play, we will stay in the Championship, definitely.”
