Boss Neil Redearn is delighted by the loan arrival of Luke Hyam but says the highly-rated midfield man will have to "earn a shirt" with Rotherham United

The 24-year-old has agreed a deal with the Millers until January and trained with his new teammates for the first time this morning.

Hyam has played 111 times for fellow Championship outfit Ipswich Town but needs game-time after a 10-month spell out injured.

"We are very fortunate to take Luke," Redfearn said. "He is highly regarded by Ipswich Town.

"He knows he needs to earn a shirt. But he is a very talented boy who comes with good Championship experience.

"I had a good chat with their manager, Mick McCarthy, about him. They don’t want to let him go, but he needs first-team exposure. He adds another dimension to us and also competition for places."

Hyam will increase the Millers' options as they prepare to face Bristol City at home on Saturday, having moved off the foot of the table with victory at Leeds United last Saturday.

"He can play one or two positions," Redfearn added. "He can sit, he can play and get box to box. He is competitive and where we are at the moment we are scrapping for every point. He’s a good fit for us."
