Rotherham United: Price too high on £2m Gregory

Millwall striker Lee Gregory is believed to be on new manager Alan Stubbs’ list of possible targets.

But the South Londoners have slapped a £2 million price tag on the 27-year-old who scored 27 goals in 53 matches for them last term.

Gregory famously questioned Rotherham’s bottle when Millwall were fighting for Championship survival with the South Yorkshire club at the end of the 2014/15 campaign.

Neil Harris’s side went down and then-boss Steve Evans kept Rotherham up, with Evans taunting Gregory about drinking celebratory bottles of champagne on the night the Millers sealed their safety with a 2-1 home win over Reading.

The scoring exploits of Sheffielder Gregory have alerted several other second-tier clubs who have more spending power than Rotherham and wouldn’t baulk at paying a seven-figure sum for his services.

Walsall right winger Anthony Forde is poised to be unveiled as Stubbs first signing since taking the hot-seat on June 7.

The 22-year-old Republic of Ireland youth international was a leading performer in the Saddlers’ march to the League One play-offs last season and is highly regarded at the Banks’s Stadium.

He is out of contract with the Midlands outfit and his arrival at AESSEAL New York Stadium is expected to be shortly. He has agreed terms and has been undergoing his medical.

Forde’s Walsall colleague, centre-forward Tom Bradshaw, is also on the Millers’ radar, but talk of a £250,000 bid with add-ons worth another £250,000 remains unconfirmed.

Forde won’t have to wait long to meet his new teammates as the Millers report back for pre-season training at their Roundwood base today.

A number of trialists will be out to impress Stubbs who will be encountering his new charges as a group for the first time.

“People talk about the opening day of the season being exciting, and it is,” Stubbs said. “But, God knows, I’m excited about June 30. I’m looking forward to physically meeting all the players.”

Right-back Stephen Kelly has signed the one-year deal he agreed last week.

Meanwhile, former Bolton Wanderers winger Liam Feeney might have become a Rotherham player had Neil Warnock remained as manager. Warnock was keen on Feeney, aged 29, who has since signed for Blackburn Rovers, but the veteran boss left the Millers in May.
