There has already been significant interest in the position vacated by Jackett, who shocked the Championship club by resigning over the weekend just five games into a three-year deal.

But Stewart says the Millers will take stock before naming a successor.

“I think we have to think long and hard,” he said.

“When you look at the successful managers we have had in the past, they had the combination of enthusiasm and passion, coupled with the skill to get the best out of the playing staff.

“Those are the characteristics we are looking for.

“As you would expect, we have already had a number of enquiries, but what we want to try to void is rushing what will be a very important appointment.

Stewart says he and Jackett had discussed the club’s transfer plans for the January window.

“We held talks and the feeling was very much one of positivity,” he said. “From my point of the view, the project with Kenny was always a three-year plan.”

Meanwhile, former player Guy Branston has offered his services to the club in any shape or form.

“I love that club and if they want help with anything then I would help them tomorrow,” he said.

“If the club were interested in it, I would do any role. I applied for the head of recruitment role recently, but that wasn’t meant to be. At least they got back to me with class and integrity.

“They’re the club I look at straight away. They’re the club I want to do well.

“My career was never the same I after I left. I never found that group of lads, I never found what I had with the fans.

“I had a lot of clubs and only had a few where I felt that love from the fans.
