Rotherham United: More new signings to follow Becchio

The Millers are waiting only on international clearance before officially confirming the capture of the 32-year-old frontman who has been training with them for the last fortnight.

Redfearn also wants to bolster his midfield before next Saturday’s Championship visit to Cardiff City.

“I’d like to think there will be new faces in,” he said. “Becchio has passed his medical and terms have been agreed so it’s just a question of getting clearance for him. That’s a big plus for us. It’s extra competition up top.

“We’re short of bodies in midfield. We’ve got young Thorpey (Tom Thorpe) who is a utility player who can perhaps fill in in a midfield position and we’ve got Manu Ledesma who can do maybe one of the two wide roles, but there aren’t obvious options in the midfield positions.

“Lee Frecklington is out for maybe another couple of weeks, so as much as it’s about putting quality in there it’s also about numbers.”

Redfearn, with his squad hit by injuries and his ability to make changes limited, cited tiredness as one of the reasons behind his team’s 3-0 defeat against QPR on Saturday which ended a run of three successive home victories.

The Millers manager expects the market to start moving more quickly now the January transfer window is in its final fortnight and Championship clubs have come through a busy spell of three matches in eight days.

“We’re not that far off,” he confirmed. “It’s the same old situation where we’re waiting for clubs to get players in before they let players go out. It’s frustrating because we know the ones we want and they’re aware of our interest.

“If we could have had a couple of bodies in against QPR, it would have made a difference. If you look at our bench, it’s a little bit lop-sided. It hasn’t got much balance where we can use it to change things and get after teams.”

On top of Becchio, who had a loan spell with the club last season and has scored 77 goals in 161 starts in English football, Rotherham have targeted another addition to their offensive ranks.

“We’ve just got to look at our attacking options - what’s out there and what’s available. - whether it’s going to be an attacking midfield player or whether it’s going to be one who plays up front alongside another striker,” Redfearn said.

“We’ll just have to look at the quality that’s out there. It has to fit with what we’ve got.”

Midfield man Paul Green, who was the Millers’ man of the match against the Hoops, believes Redfearn is right to bring in new faces.

“We’ve played three matches in just over a week and we have stuck more or less with the same team,” he said. “With more bodies coming in, we can chop and change and add more fresh legs and more sharpness.”
