Rotherham United: Millers target new striker ... but it's not Ranger

Manager Neil Warnock wants to bring in a speedy forward as the third-bottom Millers look to bridge a six-point gap between them and Championship safety.

Ranger, who has convictions for criminal damage and robbery and was cleared of a rape charge earlier in his career, is training with Rotherham, but no deal involving the 24-year-old is imminent.

“You have got to look at someone up front,” said Warnock, whose side entertain Brentford tomorrow. “Pace is an important part of the game and I think we have one or two pacy lads, but you could always do with somebody else.

“We are looking to bring in another body and the chairman is more than happy with me doing that.”

Warnock has allowed free agent Ranger, a former Newcastle United, Swindon Town and Blackpool player who hasn’t played since November 2014, to train with his squad.

He has been without a club since walking out on the Tangerines last year.

“Someone just asked me if he could come in for a few days and I never say ‘no’ to a pro,” Warnock said. “He’s had his problems everywhere, hasn’t he.

“If he wants to train with us, it is not costing us anything. If I can help him in any way, I will do.

“I have never considered anything on the playing side. But like everything else, when you see him through the gatepost, it’s publicity, isn’t it.

“He won’t be involved for a few weeks with us as he isn’t fit enough.”
