Rotherham United: Millers in Warnock's thoughts as he considers next job

The Millers made certain of their Championship safety with a 0-0 draw at Wolves on Saturday to extend their unbeaten run to 11 matches and Warnock intends to bide his time before deciding on his future

Bigger clubs will come calling when the veteran manager’s short-term deal expires next month, yet talks with Rotherham chairman Tony Stewart could have a big influence on his final decision.

“It’s only fair that I sit and take a step back,” he said. “It’s going to be a very difficult job, without a shadow of a doubt, but it is not one I am afraid of.

“Right from the start, I have said to Tony: ‘Let’s sit down when we are safe.’ There are obviously going to be other clubs interested, we’re not daft, so I have never kept anything from the chairman.

“I tell him everything. He knows that, and we will sit down at the end of next week and see where we are.”

Warnock has been in charge for 14 matches and has masterminded a survival charge during which the Millers have bridged a six-point gap between them and safety to move up to 19th in the table, 10 points clear of the drop zone.

Informal discussions between him and Stewart will begin when the pair have one of their regular duels on the golf course.

“We’ll talk on Thursday between the fourth and the fifth hole where he normally lets me win,” Warnock said. “I will be in the Championship next year. I am speaking to Tony so we will just have to see how it develops.

“There are a few jobs going to be available. There are big jobs that need doing at certain clubs. The chairman has been fantastic to me since I have been here.”

With Rotherham’s place in the second tier mathematically assured, preparations for next year can begin in earnest, with upgrading the club’s Parkgate training base a top priority.

“Now they can build for the future, whoever is in charge,” Warnock said. “The training ground needs a lot of work.

“We need to improve the infrastructure. We are competing against Aston Villa next season and probably Sunderland and Newcastle.

“We have to do something with the training ground in the summer.

“You have got to keep going, keep the money coming in from the Championship, improve the infrastructure, keep getting better so it is easier to sign players when you take them to the training ground.”

Left midfielder Joe Newell’s season is over as he will undergo ankle surgery today, but Warnock revealed the calf injury which saw Danny Ward miss the Wolves match isn’t serious and that the striker was left out only as a precaution.
