The Millers are in the race for the 32-year-old who is a free agent after leaving MK Dons.

But the former Sheffield Wednesday player isn’t short of suitors and is talking to other teams as well before making his final decision.

Rotherham’s chances are strengthened by the fact assistant manager Richie Barker was No 2 at Stadium MK during some of Barker’s time with the Dons and there is mutual respect between the pair.

The Millers will play in League One next season after their relegation from the Championship and Potter knows the division well, having played 37 third-tier games for the Dons last term.

“I worked with him for a few years or so,” Barker said last week. “He is someone I think highly of. I enjoyed working with him. He knows what I think of him.”

Manager Paul Warne has said his recruitment focus this summer is on young, hungry players, but the club also acknowledge the need for a degree of experience to hold the side together.

There is a need for midfield reinforcements following Richie Smallwood’s decision to reject a new deal and end his three-and-a-half-year spell at New York Stadium.

Warne, who is likely to lose frontman Danny Ward to Cardiff City, wants three new strikers and Fleetwood Town’s David Ball is a target.

The 27-year-old scored 14 times last year as the Trawlermen reached the League One play-offs and is also known for the number of goals he creates.

Other League One outfits are also keen on the ex-Manchester City trainee who is out of contract at Highbury and ready to move on.

In five seasons with Fleetwood, he has made 209 appearances and hit the net 49 times.

The Millers only new face so far is centre-half Michael Ihiekwe who signed a two-year deal a fortnight ago after opting to leave Tranmere Rovers.
