Interim boss Warne, taking charge of only his second game, led the Millers to their first win in 16 matches as they saw off Championship rivals QPR at New York Stadium today.

And Frecklington, back in the side after a five-match injury absence, praised the impact of the fitness coach who has stepped up as temporary manager after the shock resignation last week of Kenny Jackett.

“I have a bond with Warney,” said the skipper. “We’re both ‘Rotherham United’ people. We get what the club is about, and I play the game the way he used to, full of effort.

“He’s been just like you’d expect since he took over. He’s been really positive and has encouraged and supported us all. I’d be delighted to see him stay in the role for a while. I’d run through a brick wall for him. Today’s display was like the Rotherham of old.”

The Millers, 10 points adrift of safety at the foot of the table, gave their all against their London visitors, scored through Izzy Brown after 24 minutes and could have added to their lead in a stirring second half when the New York crowd was in full voice.

“The fans make a big difference,” Frecklington said. “When you’re starting to tire in the second half, you can feel yourself being driven on by their support.”

Warne, who saw his side lose 2-1 at Burton Albion last week, said: “It’s a better feeling, winning. It gives me great pride. The players left nothing out there. They should be proud of themselves.

“They are buzzing like we have won a cup final. I want good, proper football players and they are a group of lads who have got a bit closer. I think that was shown in the performance.”
