Former Sheffield United boss Warnock could be interested in the vacancy, initially to the end of the season as Rotherham look to preserve their Championship status.

A former Millers player who still has an affinity for the club, he had short spell in temporary charge at QPR earlier this season.

Rotherham are already receiving calls from agents, with Crawley Town boss Mark Yates and Paolo Di Canio, who applied for the job before Redfearn weas given it last October, believed to be among those keen.

Ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss Gary Megson is another name in the frame and ready for his first managerial appointment since leaving the Owls under the regime of Milan Mandric.

Another one-time Wednesday manager, Stuart Gray, could be available, although he was overlooked for the role when the Millers opted for Redfearn.

After just 21 games in charge, Redfearn paid the price for losing successive matches against relegation rivals Charlton Athletic and Bolton Wanderers.

Rotherham chairman Tony Stewart said: “It is with a heavy heart that we’ve parted company with Neil. As we all know, ootball is a results -driven business and, with 16 games to go, our aim has to be to retain our Championship status.

“Everyone at the club wishes Neil well with his future career.
