The Millers, who almost forced a draw in their Championship 2-1 defeat after having Peter Odemwingie sent off in the first half at New York Stadium, have a clutch of new injury concerns.

Utility man Greg Halford, goalkeeper Lee Camp and midfielder Joe Newell all limped out of the action, while Jon Taylor failed a late fitness test after reporting a back problem.

Despite being reduced to 10 men and being 2-0 behind at the break, the Millers fought back in the second half and suffered 89th-minute agony in their search for an equaliser as centre-half Dominic Ball fired over the bar when it seemed easier to score.

Halford initially appears to be the severest casualty, while the club will be hoping last season’s Player of the Year, Camp, makes a swift recovery.

“Greg has gone to hospital. He seems to have a crack on the ankle,” manager Kenny Jackett said.

“Lee was knee to knee. It’s tough to know how he is. Newell came off and was struggling with the top of his hamstring. The three substitutions were all injury-related.

“I don’t know how long they will be out, Greg seems to be the worst one.

“Jon Taylor had a back injury from last week. We are hopeful for next week. We’ll see what the medical team can do to turn it around.”

X-rays have confirmed Halford’s ankle isn’t broken, but the 31-year-old was in real discomfort as he left the ground.

Odemwingie will be banned for the next three matches after receiving a straight red card for elbowing Liam Cooper in the face in the 29th minute.

Rotherham remain bottom of the table and 11 points adrift of safety, but produced a rousing response to their adversity last Saturday.

“There was a younger group on at the end and they showed heart, running and quality and no little ability. I am very pleased about that,” Jackett said.

“It could have got us back in a game that we looked like we were out of. They are the future and something we can build on going forward.

“They are disappointed not to get back into it. They are determined to work on getting things right.

“The performance had a lot of positives in the second period; not everything, but it had players wanting to make their name, wanting to establish themselves and have a go at the Championship.

“They have to continue with that workrate and hunger.”
