The midfielder, currently away on international duty with Republic of Ireland Under-21s, is on a season-long loan from Championship rivals QPR and has impressed in the Millers side, scoring penalties in the win over Derby and the draw with Stoke.

As part of any season-long loan deal, his parent club Rangers have the option to take him back to Loftus Road in the January transfer window.

Whether that would be to play in their team or to simply stop him playing for Rotherham '“ a potential rival at the foot of the table '“ Warne concedes it is a possibility.

'Every season-long loan has a recall option,' Warne told the Star. 'That is obviously my fear.

'It has never been an option that we would buy him, that's never been a conversation.

'In fairness to Ryan, they think the world of him at QPR, it's not like they want him out and they want to get rid of him, they actually do like him and want him to play games.

'If he is playing really well and they are struggling in midfield they might have him back or they might do it for another reason.

'It's a long way to go between now and then.'

It is a position Warne knows well as 12 months ago he had the possibility of Kieffer Moore's recall hanging over his head and he is already eyeing targets in case any of his loanees '“ Manning, Richie Towell, Marek Rodak, Zak Vyner or Sean Raggett '“ get summoned back to their parent club.

'It's always a problem and it is always a constant thing with recruitment,' Warne added.

'We are constantly watching so if something happens we have targets. I am aware of the fact that things might change in January.

'It's quite good to see Norwich doing well so it is less likely they will call Sean back.'

Warne certainly hopes to keep Manning at the AESSEAL New York Stadium as he has made a mark in the opening few weeks of the season.

'With Joe Newell, Joe Mattock and now Ryan it just gives you good balance, having three left-footers is quite rare,' he said.

'I like him in a three, he is quite forward thinking, he is a confident kid in a good way, he has added something.

'He has done well to keep Matty Palmer and Wilesy out of the team.'
