The new Millers boss handed debuts to four players in Saturday’s 2-2 Championship opening-day draw at home to Wolves after bringing in three new recruits in three days in the build-up to the game.

“I hope next week is going to be fantastic, if last week was cracking,” he said after watching Danny Ward and Will Vaulks put his side 2-0 ahead in his first match in charge.

The Liverpudlian is looking to add a striker, a winger and defenders to his squad before the close of the August transfer window and expects Rotherham to break the transfer record they set only last Wednesday when they paid around £500,000 for Jon Taylor.

Taylor, Vaulks, Jake Forster-Caskey and Anthony Forde made their first appearances in Millers shirts against the West Midlanders.

“They showed a certain degree of promise,” Stubbs said. “Will, Jake, Jon and Fordey contributed to the game and they can be pleased, but it’s the first game.

“It’s a point towards where we want to go at the end of the season. It should have been three but it’s a point.”

Skipper Lee Frecklington and Joe Mattock limped out of Saturday’s clash, while Kirk Broadfoot appeared to hurt his hamstring late on.

“With Frecks it looks like his calf has either had a cramp or it has tightened up,” Stubbs revealed. “Joe has got a similar knock to his knee to the one I brought him off for against Sunderland. Hopefully it’s nothing too significant. We will have to see how Frecks is when he gets assessed properly.

“It wasn’t really Broady’s hamstring. It has come up from a nerve in his back. He needs to get an injection. An injection lasts only for a certain amount of time and think we are coming to the end of his last one.”

Rotherham are at home tomorrow evening against Morecambe in the first round of the EFL Cup.
