Jon Clarke, one of the best centres in the Premiership not to be capped by England, has made a quick impact at Rotherham Titans since being appointed the club’s backs coach.

The former Northampton Saints star, who played more than top-flight 100 games for the Franklin’s Gardens side, is now in his second week at Clifton Lane and, judging by the way Rotherham’s backs performed in the triumph over Bedford, Clarke’s tips are working.

“I’ve loved it so far,” said the 32-year-old. “I’m still learning and this a real challenge because you’ve got to make sure you explain yourself correctly. Coming to Rotherham is a fresh start for me having left Yorkshire Carnegie.

“Rotherham is a proper rugby club and everyone wants to turn things around. After the Bedford win, we are moving in the right direction.

“The challenge now is, can we push on at London Welsh on Saturday? Rotherham must make sure they get the ball and play in the right areas and then you’ve earned the right to go wide,”

Clarke was born in Sheffield and lived briefly in the south of the city.
