The Environment Agency has suspended the environmental permit of Shaws Waste Recycling Ltd in Rotherham claiming its waste transfer site poses a high risk of fire.

From noon on Monday the skip hire firm will no longer be able to accept any waste onto its facility on Derwent Way, Wath West Industrial Estate, Wath-Upon-Dearne, until it takes steps to introduce more safety measures to protect local communities from the risk of fires.

Previous inspections by the Environment Agency and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue identified fire risks at the site, including waste is stored in large piles with inadequate fire breaks.

The site is located near residential areas, the busy Dearne Valley Parkway and the Old Moor RSPB sanctuary.
