Subhaan Ali, aged 11, of Eldon Road, Eastwood, died after 'getting into trouble' in the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation Canal near Retail World, Parkgate, Rotherham, last Thursday.

At the opening of an inquest into his death yesterday, it emerged that Subhaan and a group of friends had been playing near to the canal when the youngster disappeared in the water.

Frantic friends raised the alarm and firefighters and police officers spent four hours searching the canal before the schoolboy's body was recovered.

Subhaan's funeral service was held at Ridge Road Mosque, Eastwood, yesterday.

The youngster, who had just left Sitwell Junior School and was due to start at Clifton Community School in September, was into the fourth day of his summer break from school when tragedy struck.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.
